Trompe l'oeil

French for ‘trick of the eye’. Trompe as its more commonly known covers a wide variety of faux finishes as they are all intended to do just as it says and that is to trick the eye into believing something that is not. Although most fall into their respective categories as faux finishes.

True trompe l’oeil when executed properly can make a flat surface look 3 dimensional using shading and blending techniques. Turning a bland, flat surface into one of form and composition.

Our craftsmen are traditional trained and experienced using various types of media to create such effects including traditional casein distemper, egg tempera, oil glazes and also modern acrylics and emulsions.
